On May 19, 2016, Hampshire County Emergency Medical Services held its annual awards banquet to recognize personnel for years of service and to present awards for outstanding life saving efforts. Along with awards to many other area personnel, HC EMS presented "Save" awards to nine Plainfield responders for their mutual-aid efforts at a two-car head-on collision on Route 9 in Cummington in 2015. Police Chief Stacey Hudson, Fire Chief Dennis Thatcher, Fire Lieutenant Matthew Hardwick, Fire Lieutenant Merton Taylor Jr., Medical Officer/Firefighter/EMT Ellen Dupont, Firefighter/EMT Brian Hawthorne, Firefighter Claude Dupont, Firefighter Jamie Wooldridge, and Firefighter Tyler Shearer received awards, and were personally thanked by the driver whose life they helped save.

The Plainfield Volunteer Firefighters Association applauds the efforts of these dedicated volunteers. This story is a reminder of how much all of us in small towns rely on our neighbors. We salute the many Cummington Fire and Highland Ambulance personnel who were the primary responding companies on this call and who were also recognized, and we thank Cummington Fire Chief Bernard Forgea especially for his dedication, professionalism, and for honoring Plainfield's responders with these awards.
